Questions/Prompts/What do you think? Response to question 1 (Chapters 1-4)

In the story "All Quiet on the Western Front", Paul offers a strong, practical sense of esprit de corps, which in the field developed into the finest thing that arose out of the war, comradeship. This concept is taken to the sense of friendship with the many people surrounding you, as you are all in the same place and situation about to fight in war, together. It is based off of the ones need to feel safe with one another, even though the situation they are in is terrifying and dangerous. They are doing it together, with pride to help their nation and one another. The novel kicks off about the danger and horror of their experiences of war in general and what they might witness in the future. Although it seems like such a horrible scene to be in, it was what they thought should happen the way they were being trained and what they were being told. It was all a matter of time before it all came into good use in the battle and to help keep them alive, to finish strong throughout. As they start their journey, new experiences come their way and go through tough obstacles that in their minds thought would never have to encounter. It all came to the realization that this is now their new life, just like a new baby is born.  They will have to be face and challenge themselves to go through obstacles that are getting in their way. They need to stick together to keep themselves and each other safe and fight together as one. As Paul said “…we recognized that what matters is not the mind but the boot brush, not intelligence but the system, not freedom but drill.” (Page 20) this shows that the theme of esprit de corps has sustained a continuous flow and will still be the way they think throughout their entire journey.
