How war affects a soldier
Innocence in the war
This picture directly portrays when the recruit gets "blown to bits" by a shell when he ran out of the trenches from fear. This picture shows the theme of how the recruit is innocent, running from fear for his life, this also shows how war affects a soldier to make them break mentally and go insane of the fear of dying and how they are horrified of not being able to experience something else other than war. We know that the recruit "cracked" and got loose from the soldiers which caused his to run out of the trenches and instantly get hit by a shell. Not only does this show how these soldiers are just kids that have no combat experience it shows that they are innocent, they know not of what they do or if what they do will kill them they are just kids right out of school that took them more than 80 percent of their life and during that time they did no learn anything about how to be ready for war or how to be mentally prepared for it. The more experienced soldiers were not phased by his death they were more focused on keeping the other recruits from cracking and trying to run, a person was just blown to bits right in front of your face and you don't care about it more or less give him a second of consideration, the last thought in your head before he died right in front of your eyes was he is a pain in my back and your thoughts probably did not change after he died. This shines light on how war affects a soldier and how a soldier in war has no morality no passion no love they only care about living and making it through so they can get what they were "promised" or even brainwashed into thinking that they would be living the high life if they make it through this.
