There are a variety of different differences and similarities between Erich Maria Remarque's "All Quiet on the Western Front" and this image taken from RareHistoricalPhotos.com. There are some blatant similarities, such as the fact that both the novel and this image take place on the Western Front during World War I. They both display violence, pain and death, however, there is something odd about this image. There are only two clearly visible people in this photo, while in the Western Front there were much more people both dead and alive. Also, while there are quite a few amount of people in this photo, someone clearly threw a grenade at this single person, although grenades are more commonly used on a multitude of people. This reminds me of when Paul makes direct eye contact with an enemy, an intense moment passes and then Paul tosses a grenade at the man who is relatively alone.
