Gasses Over the Front

The quote written on page 131 in "All Quiet On The Western Front" displayed the gruesome imagery of gas falling just like the image above. "A surprise gas-attack carries off a lot of them. They have not yet learned what to do. We found one dug-out full of them, with blue heads and black lips. Some of them in a shell-hole took off their masks too soon; they did not know that the gas lies longest in the hollows; when they saw others on top without masks they pulled theirs off too and swallowed enough to scorch their lungs. Their condition is hopeless, they choke to death with haemorrhages and suffocation." There are many similarities/commonalities between the picture and the quote on page 131. They both show the soldiers getting affected so badly by the gas and show the suffering each soldier went through. Both the quote and the image show soldiers running for their lives while their fellow soldiers/brothers die from it and they aren't allowed to turn or else they will die too. In contrast the soldiers seemed to be clueless in the book and in the image they aren't even wearing gas masks. These are both different but you can think of it as the same way. They are both clueless because they aren't wearing the masks. This is why there can be similarities and differences between quotes and images.

  1. Ritesh, I think you chose a good quote to help support what you are saying. I think it would be beneficial to focus on the things we talked about in class, (theme, diction, mood/tone) to help elaborate your thinking. Also, I think the men are wearing gas masks. How do you think this image helps people and connects to the theme of the story? I think that although there are differences between the image and text, and image can help people visualize while reading the text can help you get the deeper, gruesome details. Overall, good job. :)))))
